Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a powerful internal cleanser. The molecular structure of this ancient compound traps the toxins and heavy metals in our bodies and carries them out through our elimination systems. DE is the fossilised remains of microscopic shells created by single celled plants called diatoms.

The tiny diatom shells are not food. The cylinders have a powerful negative charge and the masses of holes and openings are the right size to absorb positively charged virus and bacteria, trap them, and pass them out of the body.

DE also works on parasites. The cylinders, by the millions, pass through the stomach and the intestines, and being very abrasive destroy parasites with absolutely no side effects. This is a physical action not a chemical action.

This product is food grade Diatomaceous Earth sourced from the great inland lakes of America. It is extremely pure with diatoms of consistent shape and tubular with holes in the walls. Of 600 deposits of diatoms in the US only 4 are considered food grade.

Most people taking Diatomaceous Earth internally do so in a smoothie or fruit drink. Some people prefer to take it mixed with plain water. I take one tablespoon a day in a smoothie.

Anyone commencing to use DE would be advised to start slowly with a teaspoon a day and work up to a tablespoon or two tablespoons.

Diatomaceous Earth has a number of internal and external applications as well as application with pets and other animals.

Internal Virus and Bacteria Scavenging

Internal Cleanse
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is the form of silica that facilitates the cleansing and detoxifying of our internal system. The molecular structure of diatoms trap toxins and heavy metals in our body and carries them out through our elimination systems.

DE has been reported to absorb methyl mercury, e. coli, endotoxins, viruses, organophosphate pesticide residues, and drug residues.

The cleansing and detoxification appears to be responsible for a myriad of positive effects that people report, rather than the absorption of trace elements of silica.

Anti parasitic

Intestinal Parasites
Used internally, Diatomaceous Earth functions as a mild abrasive as it moves through our digestive system, tearing away at intestinal parasites along with other dangerous microorganisms.

It stimulates digestion and the absorption of nutrients by sweeping foreign bodies and build up on the linings of our internal canals.

Teeth and gums

Dentist Like Clean
The mild abrasive effect of Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a good way to give your teeth a dentist-like clean.

Put toothpaste on your brush as you normally would and then dip it in some DE. We keep a little pot in the bathroom for this purpose. Your teeth are noticeably cleaner and smoother, just like the shiny feel you get after a clean and scale at the dentist.

We tend to use it in this way once a week or so.

Skin

Dermal Abrasion
Diatomaceous Earth is great as a rejuvenating treatment for your face.

Mix the powder with a little bit of water until you have a thick paste. Apply to the skin in a circular motion. You will feel the gentle abrasive tingling on your skin. Leave for a few minutes and then wash off and you have a face that is not only fully exfoliated but also toned. You need to use a thick paste so add the water a little at a time until you have the right consistency.

Follow up with a layer of your favourite raw virgin coconut oil.

Orthosicilic acid

Bio-available Silica
The form of silica determines its level of bioavalability to our body. The silica that occurs in nature, and Diatomaceous Earth is the dioxide form of silica (SiO2) and has low bioavailability. Also the silicates found in food typically have low solubility and low bioavailability.

The dietary and bioavailable version of silica is Orthosicilic Acid. It is commercially available as separate supplemets but it is quite easy to make it yourself.

Si02 (silica) dissolves in water (H2O) to form orthosilicic acid, H4SiO4. Which comes from SiO2 + 2 H2O. So if you want to make orthosicilic acid it's a simple process of putting some DE in a water container, adding some water, say 3 litres, waiting a couple of days until it settles and then start drinking.

The recommended amount is about 2 glasses a day. It's easiest just to take out 500mls or so and put in a water bottle and then add another 500mls to the container. As you are only require tiny amounts the amount of DE required is quite small and it will keep the chemical reaction going for months.

The level of orthosicilic acid you absorb will be unquantified unless you want to have the water tested but my understanding is that there are no upper toxicity levels.

Pets

Internal Parasites
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is an effective alternative to animal worming. We have one cat who refuses to take tablets and I dislike the toxic pour-on medication but there are generally few other alternatives that actually work. We also have one cat that consistently has worms no matter how often the wormer is applied.

Since switching to DE all the pets are worm free. I put it on their biscuits and mix with their wet food. We had a bit of a hunger strike for about four days when I first introduced the DE but they caved in after about four days and now don't seem to notice.

Recommended dosage for pets is approximately:'

  • Half a teaspoon per day for kittens
  • One teaspoon per day for adult cats
  • Half a teaspoon per day for puppies
  • Small dogs, under 15kg, one teaspoon per day
  • Medium size dogs, between 15kg and 35kg, one tablespoon per day

Exoskeleton Bugs
When sprinkled on a bug that has an exoskeleton, like a flea, bed bug, or ant, it gets caught in their exoskelatol joints and as they move they cut and die.

Diatomaceous Earth has a number of internal and external applications as well as application with pets and other animals.

Ageing

Alzheimer's Disease
There is a stronly established link between Alzheimer's disease and the levels of aluminium found in the body. A pre-eminent scientist in aluminium toxicity refers to the current era as the 'Aluminium Age'. It is heavily used in construction but also in a wide range of everyday use products like deodorant and make up and also forms part of many vaccinations.

Dr Exley carried out a 12 week study of 32 people (16 with and 16 without Alzheimer's) published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. Dr Exley's study concluded:

  • Silicon-rich water can leach aluminium from the human body
  • The potential for adverse effects is very limited because most of the silicon is passed through the body
  • Chelation of copper and iron, which have a role in human metabolism, is minimal, and
  • In general women in the study excreted more aluminium than men

Note that the study involves the taking of silicon-rich water which makes the silicon available as silicic acid. This is discussed under Orthosicillic acid

Diabetes & blood

Cholesterol Concentrations
There is a published study by Professor Adolf Butenandt, Professor at the University of Berlin and Director of the Institute of Biochemistry.

He monitored 19 healthy individuals with a history of hypercholesterinemia (presence of high levels of cholesterol in the blood) for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL, the 'good' cholesterol), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL, the 'bad' cholesterol) and triglycerides (a type of fat found in the blood, with high levels seen as a potential marker for heart disease).

The individuals were adminstered 250 mg of diatomaceous earth daily, three times a day for eight weeks.

The study found that, compared to the baseline:

  • There was a significant reduction in the total level of cholesterol at all points during the study, and
  • There was a significant reduction of LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels during the study

Four weeks after the intake of diatomaceous earth was stopped:

  • Total cholesterol remained low
  • LDL cholesterol and triglycerides remained low, and
  • There was an increase in HDL cholesterol that was rated 'significant'

Detox

Toxic Waste Removal
Dr Kaayla Daniels, American nutritionist and expert on toxic metals, wrote on the Western Price Foundation website, 'Microscopic level cell analysis of blood taken from individuals who have detoxed using food-grade DE for many months display little evidence that the particles make their way intact into the blood. Hair analysis of these individuals display normal or even slightly low amounts of silica.

This evidence, combined with a very low trace and toxic mineral content, supports the concept that DE works by removing toxins that poison the immune and regulatory functions, rather than by adding trace elements that support these processes.'

In evaluating the use of Diatomaceous Earth it is important to look at silica in context.

Silicon is the second most common element on earth, behind oxygen. It is the second most abundant element in the earth's crust, primarily found in the form of silica or silicon dioxide.

Silicon is present in most of our organic tissues, bony tissues and connective tissues. Silica is essential in the body for proper growth and development. The underlying reason for this is that silica is necessary for collagen formation.

Collagen is the tough (depending on your age) fibrous material that holds the body together. Many of the problems of ageing are simply the inability of the body to maintain adequate collagen. Collagen has an impact on a diverse number of ageing problems, including:

  • Joint deterioration
  • Brittle bones
  • Hardening of the arteries
  • Dry skin
  • Inability to digest food properly, and
  • Weakened gums and teeth

The major precaution with Diatomaceous Earth is around breathing the dust. It is an extremely fine powder similar to talcum powder and will cause a similar reaction to breathing talcum powder.

You should keep the powder well away from your face when handling it and keep out of the reach of children.
